What is so groundbreaking about Einstein's theory of relativity?

This is the little detail I know about it: Its description of general relativity explains how gravity is made- the warping of space-time depending on the object's mass. I know it also explains space-time... Please can someone explain why general relativity is so important in defining the universe as well as what it exactly explains?|||"can someone explain why general relativity is so important in defining the universe as well as what it exactly explains?"





I actually looked it up before realizing that the answer to your question is "no". You would need a couple years of advanced calculus before anyone could explain it to you.





They are mathematical descriptions of observed fundamental phenomena, the special theory dealing with the constant speed of light, and the general theory dealing with the equivalence of acceleration and gravity. The resulting equations have been used for weighing quarks and mapping quasars, atomic power and gps systems, and a bunch of other things, so I'm a little nonplussed at the question "what EXACTLY does it explain"





I guess you could say they explain 'exactly' why the speed of light is constant, and why acceleration is the same as gravity.|||It says that gravity isn't just some instantaneous force all over. It is mediated through the space intervening between the two attracting objects. The space has fabric-like properties and it can stretch and twist, locally warping time and geometry.
